With a motorhome, you’re not tied to a schedule, you can take your time, enjoy the scenery, and find those lesser-known spots that many visitors miss.
Why Dartmoor?
Dartmoor National Park is a vast expanse of moorland covering over 950 square kilometres across Devon. Steeped in history, folklore, and natural beauty, Dartmoor offers something for everyone, from ancient stone circles that predate Stonehenge to hidden river valleys and stunning panoramic views.
But what makes Dartmoor particularly special for motorhomers is its sense of remoteness without ever being truly remote. You’re never too far from a cosy village pub, a farm shop full of local produce, or a quiet layby with breathtaking views.
And if you’re starting your journey with Select Motorhomes, you’re in the perfect position to explore it all. Located in Newton Abbot, we’re just a short drive from the heart of the park, so you can pick up and go!
Hidden Gems You Don’t Want to Miss
Fingle Bridge and the Teign Gorge
Tucked away on the eastern edge of Dartmoor, this picturesque spot is a haven for walkers and nature lovers. Park up at the National Trust car park, which is suitable for small to medium-sized motorhomes, especially outside peak times. From here, take a gentle riverside stroll through the gorge or a more challenging hike up to Castle Drogo. The nearby Fingle Bridge Inn is perfect for a post-walk pint or cream tea.
Want to stay overnight? While overnight parking isn’t permitted at Fingle Bridge, the Woodland Springs Touring Park is just a 15-minute drive away and offers fully serviced pitches in a quiet countryside setting, ideal for motorhomes.
Hound Tor and the Abandoned Medieval Village
This iconic tor offers sweeping views across the moor and is home to the fascinating ruins of a deserted medieval village, one of Dartmoor’s best-kept secrets! It’s an ideal spot for an aesthetic picnic and offers excellent photo opportunities. There’s a small car park nearby, and although it can get tight in high season, it is generally suitable for daytime motorhome parking if you arrive early or during off-peak hours. It’s the perfect quiet and picturesque spot to explore for a few hours.
Want to stay overnight? Overnight stays aren't allowed here, but you can head to Runnage Farm Campsite, about 10–15 minutes away, which welcomes motorhomes and offers a peaceful location not far from the tor.
Postbridge and Bellever Forest
Well-known for its medieval clapper bridge, Postbridge is a great base for leisurely walks into Bellever Forest, where you might spot wild ponies, deer, and a variety of birds. The Postbridge Visitor Centre car park is motorhome-friendly during the day, with pay-and-display options and visitor facilities like toilets and local maps. Bellever Forest car park also has space for motorhomes and easy access to trails.
Want to stay overnight? For overnight stays, consider the Warren House Inn, just up the road, which allows motorhome stopovers with a purchase at the pub.
Meldon Reservoir
For something a bit more tranquil, head to Meldon Reservoir on the north-west edge of Dartmoor. There’s a well-maintained car park suitable for motorhomes. From here, you can enjoy a gentle circular walk with stunning views of the dam, moorland, and surrounding countryside. It’s peaceful, scenic, and perfect for a relaxed day out. Like many Dartmoor locations, overnight stays are not allowed, but it’s a fantastic stop for a scenic break during your route.
Want to stay overnight? Overnight parking isn’t allowed at the reservoir itself, but the Okehampton Camping and Caravanning Club Site is just a 10-minute drive away and offers full facilities for motorhomes, including electric hook-up and hardstanding pitches.
